Find your laptop

Find your laptop family below for a quick steer on which port it usually has and what to check before you buy. This is general guidance. Models and specifications change, so always confirm your exact port, or tell us your laptop at checkout and we will check it for you.

MacBook Air M Series

Recent MacBook Air models with Apple silicon usually have Thunderbolt or USB4 ports, marked with the lightning bolt symbol.

Check how many external screens your exact chip supports on Apple's technical specifications page. Base M1 and M2 chips usually support one external screen without DisplayLink.

MacBook Pro M Series

MacBook Pro models with Apple silicon usually have Thunderbolt or USB4 ports, marked with the lightning bolt symbol. Pro and Max chips generally support more external screens than the base chip.

Check your exact chip's external screen limit on Apple's technical specifications page before buying a multi-screen dock.

Dell XPS and Latitude

Most recent Dell XPS and Latitude models have Thunderbolt or USB4 ports, though some Latitude models use USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode instead.

Check your model's exact port type in Dell's specifications, or tell us your model at checkout.

Lenovo ThinkPad

Most recent ThinkPad models have Thunderbolt 4 ports, usually marked with the lightning bolt symbol, alongside a separate charging port on some models.

Older ThinkPad models may only support USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode or plain USB-C. Check your model number against Lenovo's specifications.

HP EliteBook and ProBook

Most recent EliteBook models have Thunderbolt ports. ProBook models more often have USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode rather than full Thunderbolt.

Check the port symbol on your machine or your model's specifications on HP's website to confirm which type you have.

Microsoft Surface

Surface devices have a Surface Connect port for charging. Newer Surface models also have USB-C or USB4 ports alongside it.

Check whether your Surface model has USB-C or USB4 as well as Surface Connect, since this affects which dock and cable you need.

Chromebook

Chromebooks usually have USB-C ports. Video support over that port varies by model, and some rely on DisplayLink for external screens.

Recent ChromeOS versions support DisplayLink, so a DisplayLink dock is usually the safest choice for a Chromebook.

Older laptops with USB-A only

Older laptops without any USB-C port usually have USB-A ports only, which carry data but no video or power delivery.

A dock for a USB-A only laptop needs DisplayLink for video. Power delivery through USB-A is not available, so the laptop still needs its own charger.

Not sure which family your laptop is in

Tell us your laptop make and model at checkout. We check the port, the power delivery and the screen limit before dispatch, and if something does not connect first time we pay the postage both ways.
